A disabled champion can arouse curiosity, fondness, but rarely will it stir up admiration. We look at his gold medal with tongue in cheek. Referring to the “looking-glass-self” theory of Charles Horton Cooley, which assumes that one gains possession of one’s own self through imagining how they are perceived by others, the author especially wants to draw the attention of the disabled viewer to how disabled people can be perceived and how they can refute the determinism of their own bodies.
