Kalmykia is one of the smallest Russian republics: 300 000 inhabitants, area of 75 000 km2. Thousands kilometres of the steppe. Small, dusted with sand villages emerge from the steppe along with its only city – Elista, the republic’s capital. On the border of the steppe and Elista, right next to communist blocks of flats made of concrete, there are several houses as if from a dream on perfect American suburbs. Green lawns spread in front of the houses, a worker is painting kerbstones with snow white paint – welcome to the City of Shahs.
