Former maid in the Jansens’ residence, Anita (Macy Gray) reminisces about past events. The story is set in Florida in the summer of 1969 when racial divisions were still of great weight. The eponymous paperboy, Jack, expelled from college for a minor offence, returns to his family house. His older brother Ward (Mathew McConaughey) also comes back to investigate the case of Hillary (John Cussack), who was sentenced to death for killing a police officer. Many circumstantial evidences indicate however that he is not guilty. Although the accused is revolting and by no means arousing sympathy, the reporter along with his colleague and Jack will try to reveal the truth. The situation will change unexpectedly when one of them will fall for Charlotte (Nicole Kidman), not so young anymore but still attractive Hillary’s fiancée.
