Sebastian – idealist director – and Costa, his producer, go to the Bolivian town of Cochabamba to make an adventure film about the journey of Christopher Columbus. What lures them is the attractive outdoor-scenery and, most of all, the poverty of the locals, ready to do anything for two dollars a day. Yet the production is disturbed when there is an outbreak of protests against the privatisation of water resources in the town. The person leading the rebellion is the man who, in the film being prepared, plays the part of the legedary Hatuey – the first rebel who opposed Columbus’ expansion.
“Even the Rain” sensitively exposes colonialism that has been taking place for hundreds of years – this picture is by no means one-dimensional, depicting the double fight of the local people in a multidimensional manner and with great emotional power.
