A melodrama on Bosnian massacre. Robberies, ethnic cleansings and rapes on civilians are everyday life during a bloody conflict that breaks out in the Balkans at the beginning of the 90’s of the last century. Danijel and Ajla meet just before the war. They live in Srebrnica where all nations coexisted in peace until the fall of Yugoslavia. Their first dance is disrupted by an exploding bomb… Love and hate interweaving, a war in the background and everything filtered through feminine sensitivity of the director.
For her directing debut, Jolie cooperated exclusively with Bosnian actors but the activity scheme and overlapping plots are thoroughly Hollywood-like. Jolie may be accused of resorting to schematic presentation and black-white perception of the world however the film is a splendid piece of work with outstanding actors’ performances.
