An intimate story about a world that is no more. Danuta Szaflarska – prominent Polish film and theatre actress – is the narrator and guide through the history and culture which have shaped her as a person. The frugal form, the photography by Arhur Reinhart kept mainly within black-and-white poetics, interwoven with material from the actress’ archives as well as shots from “Forbidden songs,” “The treasure,” “Farewell to Maria,” and “Time to die” – all create a framework for a story rich in digressions, memories, and sense of humour, which the protagonist shares with us. In the course of over one and a half hour, the initial withdrawal and reserve give way to increasingly personal reflections and engagement. In “Another world,” Danuta Szaflarska, known for her reluctance towards personal confessions, invites the viewer to hear a story about the saving role of laughter, about an actor’s ethos, about the times of occupation, the extreme wartime experiences, about freedom and courage.
