Second World War in Lvov. A sewer worker Leopold Socha (Robert Więckiewicz) in exchange for payment decides to help shelter a group of Jews in the city underground. At first he perceives it as a good source of income, afterwards the matters become complicated. The Jews run out of money, pursuit of the escapees does not relent, and a deep emotional bond is born between them and Socha. His attitude becomes more and more altruistic and he discovers genuine goodness within himself.

Agnieszka Holland created a deeply moving Holocaust picture inspired by a true story, depicted, among the others, in a novel “In the Sewers of Lvov” by Robert Marshall. Recollections of the living survivor, Krystyna Chiger, were written down in “The Girl in the Green Sweater”. The film was widely acclaimed all over the world.
